The Wayuu Woven Mochila (bag) is created using a single-thread crochet technique. According to legend, a spider named Wale’ Kerü taught the women how to weave. The complex geometric designs (Kaanas) represent the Wayuu's environment, the stars, the tracks of animals, and the wind in the desert.

In the Inca Empire, textiles were actually more valuable than gold and were used to pay taxes and as sacred offerings. Techniques like double-faced weaving (creating two identical patterns on both sides of a cloth) were once reserved for royalty and remain a pinnacle of Andean craftsmanship today which expands across Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru.
