Laura Bernstein creates layered worlds that incorporate watercolor drawings, sculpture, animation, performance, video and installation. Her work draws from historical folktales, natural histories, debunked scientific theories, medieval illuminated manuscripts and theatrical spectacle traditions to probe how systems of classification shape behavior. Her work questions how the obser ver and the obser ved, human and animal, are defined and redefined within the context of a rapidly changing climate. The half human, half creaturely forms she creates confuse dis tinctions between the domes tic and the wild, between the real and the imaginar y, between the pas t and speculations about the future, and interrogate the question: ”What makes something human?"
